Looking for ideas to increase the appeal and usefulness of your patio, pool or spa area? Your outdoor living space is an extension of your home and should be planned with the same eye to detail, form and function as your indoor living spaces. Keeping in mind some of the details that work inside your home, let’s take a look at three low-cost ways that will help spruce up your current outdoor living space and/or help you create a new living space out of thin air.
First, let’s look at defining a small space, such as a covered patio, into something resembling more of a room like what you would find indoors. A 6×9 foot lattice grill screen can help give an open-sided covered patio a cozier room feel. You may also want to consider adding a vertical garden for another wall to the outdoor living area. Repurpose a cart, table or bench for another defined section of either a patio or free-standing area.
Next, consider adding a small water feature, either a table-top or free-standing fountain. There is something very soothing about the sound of water, either trickling or running, added in with the other sounds of nature such as birds chirping or squirrels scampering about in the yard. If you have a back yard pool or spa, you already know about water’s therapeutic benefits. Just be sure to keep the water circulating and change it out regularly to reduce the opportunity for mosquitos to breed near your outdoor living space.
A third option would be to add bright colors and patterns, either in the outdoor furniture, the cushions on the furniture, a backdrop on the white lattice screen, or in the flowers and pots on the patio, or the landscape design in and around your pool or spa area. Another way to add color would be through outdoor lighting, so that your evening get-togethers are not only safe to move about, but also can be enhanced with either small, twinkling points of colored lights or larger party-size colored bulbs.
As you can see, all of these items are low cost and can be purchased at your local home improvement store, hardware store or nursery. You can even afford to have some holiday-specific ideas to rotate in for Memorial Day and Independence Day celebrations. Use your imagination and combine several of these ideas to give your outdoor living space a whole new look or feel.
